How far does a fire pit have to be from the house or property line in North Carolina?
As a rule, the fire code puts an open wood recreational fire at least 25 feet from anything combustible, and a portable outdoor fireplace at least 15 feet. Property-line setbacks are set by local zoning, not a single statewide number. The clearance numbers to start from
North Carolina follows the International Fire Code, which sets baseline distances for outdoor fire. An open recreational wood fire generally has to be at least 25 feet from structures and anything combustible; a portable, manufactured outdoor fireplace can come in to about 15 feet.
Those are floors, not guarantees — your local fire marshal is the final authority and can require more on a tight or wooded lot. For the ember-throwing wood fires these rules were written around, erring farther from the house is simply smart on a mountain property ringed by trees.
Property lines are a local question
There's no single statewide setback from your property line for a fire pit — that's governed by county and municipal zoning, and it varies. Some jurisdictions specify a distance from the line; others fold it into general nuisance and open-burning rules. HOAs and gated mountain communities frequently add their own, stricter limits.
Before you pour a pad, check with your county planning or zoning office and your HOA if you have one, so you don't build something you have to move.
