How far does a fire pit need to be from the house?
In Brevard, hold a fire pit at least ten feet off the house, deck, and fences — and because so many lots here sit under heavy canopy, pay as much attention to the clear zone above the pit as to the sides. In gated communities like Connestee Falls and Sherwood Forest the HOA may demand more, and Transylvania County, forty minutes southwest of us, issues the permit.
Trees overhead are the Brevard variable
Brevard's cabins and downtown homes sit among tall pines and hardwoods, and overhanging branches are a genuine clearance concern — a fire pit needs open sky above it, not a leafy ceiling that dries out and catches. Sparks from a wood pit rise, so a low limb fifteen feet up is still in play. On the wooded gorge and Connestee lots we look at both the ten-foot horizontal setback and what hangs directly overhead.
Wet ground and gated-community rules
With 80-plus inches of rain a year, the base a pit sits on matters — a proper non-combustible pad keeps it stable and level through the wet March-to-June season that cracks crowns and rusts hardware all over Transylvania County. In a gated community the HOA's clearance can exceed the county's number, and the strictest figure governs, so confirm before you build.
Out at the cabins, it's propane
Brevard is mixed-fuel, and away from town a gas pit usually means a buried, outdoor-rated propane line coordinated with your supplier — the Napoleon Uptown square LP fire pit is one option we carry. Running and permitting that line is licensed work; a hardscaper can build the surround but can't legally connect the fuel. Call (828) 545-0525 for a free in-home assessment.
