How heavy is a gas log set?
A gas log set is surprisingly light — the logs are hollow ceramic-fiber or refractory-cement castings, so a typical set weighs only about 20 to 40 pounds including the burner and grate. Ceramic-fiber logs are the lightest; denser refractory-cement logs weigh a bit more. Either way, the set rests in your existing firebox and adds no meaningful load to the hearth or floor.
Lighter than they look — about 20 to 40 pounds
A gas log set is surprisingly light. The logs aren't wood and aren't solid — they're hollow castings, so a typical set, burner and grate included, weighs only around 20 to 40 pounds. Ceramic-fiber logs are the lightest; denser refractory-cement logs weigh a bit more. Either way the set simply rests in your existing firebox and adds no meaningful load to the hearth or floor. If you've ever lifted one expecting real firewood heft, the featherweight feel catches you off guard every time.
What they're made of
Two materials dominate. Ceramic-fiber logs are light and glow brightly when the flame washes over them — the hand-cast look Mendota builds into its premium fireplaces. Refractory-cement logs, like a Real Fyre set cast from real oak and hand-painted, are heavier, denser, and more detailed. Both are brittle: they crack if dropped or knocked around, which is why we place and arrange them precisely. On vented sets the log layout isn't just cosmetic — it also matters for how the flame reads and for clean, proper burning.
Light logs, licensed line
The logs may be featherweight, but what they connect to isn't a DIY job. In North Carolina, running or connecting the gas line to a log set is licensed work — a showroom or mason can sell you a beautiful set, but they legally can't fuel it. We size the set to your firebox, place and arrange the logs, connect and pressure-test the line, and pull the county permit.
