What size gas logs do I need for a 36-inch fireplace?
A 36-inch fireplace usually takes an 18- to 24-inch gas log set — you size down from the opening, not to match it, so the flames keep clearance from the side and back walls. Where the 36 inches actually is
'36-inch fireplace' almost always refers to the front width of the opening. Gas log sets are sold by their own size — roughly the span of the front logs and burner — and the rule of thumb is to leave several inches of clearance on each side so the flames don't lick the brick. That's why a 36-inch front opening commonly lands on an 18- to 24-inch set. Why front width alone doesn't settle it
The back of a masonry firebox is narrower than the front, and the box gets shallower toward the top — so rear width and depth can force a smaller set than the front width suggests. A vented set also needs enough depth and an open damper to vent cleanly; a ventless set carries tighter clearances and room-size BTU rules. Go too big and the logs crowd the walls and soot everything; go too small and the fire looks lost in the box. The firebox's smallest dimensions make the call.
