Can gas logs be too big for my firebox?

Yes, and oversized logs cause real problems, not just a tight look. Flames impinge on the back and side walls, which soots the brick and the logs, hurts combustion, and can crowd the damper or flue. With vented sets it's mostly soot and poor flame; with ventless it becomes a carbon-monoxide and safety issue. Bigger is never better here.

What an oversized set does

A log set that's too big for the firebox pushes flame straight into the back and side walls instead of letting it rise cleanly. That flame impingement is the number-one cause of the black soot we get called about — on the logs, on the firebox, and creeping onto the glass or the wall above. It also chokes the burn: crowd the set and the fire runs sooty and lazy instead of tall and bright. In a tight firebox the logs can even sit under the damper and interfere with draft.

Ventless raises the stakes

With a vented set, an oversized fit is mostly a soot-and-appearance problem — the chimney still carries combustion byproducts up and out. With a ventless (vent-free) set, every bit of that combustion stays in the room, so flame impingement doesn't just make soot, it produces carbon monoxide and can trip the set's oxygen-depletion sensor. Ventless logs are sized to the firebox with almost no margin for error, which is exactly why we won't eyeball one.

Right-sized beats oversized

The honest move is the set that fits with the manufacturer's clearances intact, even if that means going a nominal size smaller than the firebox looks like it could take. We'd rather give you a clean, bright fire that doesn't soot than cram in the biggest logs on the shelf.
