How much clearance do gas logs need from the firebox walls?
There's no single number — clearance is built into each manufacturer's minimum firebox dimensions, and you honor it by fitting the right nominal size, not by measuring a gap. Generally the flames shouldn't touch the back or side walls, with a few inches of breathing room front to back. Vented sets are more forgiving; ventless sets demand strict, exact clearance.
It's a fit spec, not a tape measurement
People expect a rule like 'two inches off every wall,' but gas log clearance is engineered into the set's published minimum firebox dimensions — front width, rear width, depth, and height. Meet those minimums with the correct nominal size and the clearance is correct by design: the flame envelope has room to rise without licking brick, the grate sits off the back wall, and the burner gets proper air. Under-size the firebox and you've violated the clearance whether you measured a gap or not.
The two sets play by different rules
Vented logs give you some margin — combustion goes up the chimney, so a little flame near the back mostly costs you soot and flame quality. Ventless logs are unforgiving: because everything stays in the room, the flames are precisely tuned to clear the logs and walls, and any impingement means soot and carbon monoxide. That's why ventless sets carry tighter firebox requirements and an oxygen-depletion sensor, and why we treat their clearance as non-negotiable.
