Many Backgrounds. One Standard.

When a gas log set is called 24 inches, what does that measurement actually refer to?

A 24-inch gas log set refers to the length of the logs across the front of the set — roughly the width the burner and grate span from side to side. It is not your firebox size, not the depth, and not the opening width. It's the nominal size of the log assembly itself, which then has to fit inside a firebox that's bigger than 24 inches.

The number names the logs, not the opening

Gas log sets are sold by nominal size — 18, 24, 30 inches and so on — and that number describes the log assembly, specifically how far the logs and grate span across the front. Our Real Fyre Charred American Oak set, for example, is a 24-inch set: the logs measure roughly two feet across the front burner. That's the figure on the box, and it's the one people most often mistake for their fireplace's width.

Your firebox always has to be larger

A 24-inch set never drops into a 24-inch firebox. Every manufacturer publishes minimum firebox dimensions — front width, rear width, depth, and height — that run a few inches bigger than the nominal size, because the flames need room off the back and side walls. Measure your opening at 24 inches and match it with a 24-inch set, and you'll have flames licking the brick, soot, and a set that won't seat. The nominal number is a starting point, not a fit.

Getting it right the first time

Older Asheville fireboxes taper hard from front to back, so the width that matters is often the narrow rear, not the wide front you see. Bring us the front width, rear width, depth to the back wall, and height to the damper, and we'll match a set that fits with proper clearance — or tell you a smaller nominal size is the honest call. Call (828) 545-0525 or visit our Asheville showroom to see the sizes side by side.
