How long do the refractory panels in a prefab wood-burning fireplace last?

Why panels wear before the firebox

Refractory panels are the light, heat-resistant liners on the back and sides of a prefab (factory-built) wood fireplace. Their whole job is to reflect heat back into the room and shield the metal firebox behind them from direct flame. Because they absorb every fire's heat and cool down after, they crack and erode over time — 8 to 15 years is typical, sometimes less if the fireplace is burned hard. The prefab unit itself usually lasts 15 to 30 years, so you'll often replace panels once or twice over its life.

Hairline surface cracks from heat cycling are normal at first. It's the deeper damage that matters.

When cracks become a safety issue

The line we draw for customers: replace the panels when a crack is wide enough to fit a nickel edge, when pieces are crumbling or spalling out, or when you can see the metal firebox behind them. At that point the panels can no longer protect the steel shell from direct fire, and that's a real hazard — this is why a fireplace inspection flags them. Worn refractory is a safety call, not a looks call, and burning a prefab with failed panels risks the firebox itself.

Replace the panels, not the fireplace

The reassuring part: worn panels rarely mean a new fireplace. On most prefab units the panels are a replaceable set matched to your model, so we swap them and the fireplace is good for years more. The exception is a discontinued unit with no available panels — then it becomes a repair-or-replace conversation, and we'll give you the honest math rather than nickel-and-dime a lost cause.
