How long does a fireplace service appointment take?
Plan on about an hour to 90 minutes for a standard gas fireplace tune-up, and closer to one to two hours for a wood-burning chimney sweep and inspection. A single, well-maintained unit goes quicker; multiple fireplaces, heavy creosote, a stubborn part, or hard-to-reach venting can push it longer. We'd rather do it right than rush.
What eats the time
The clock is really about disassembly and access, not brushing. On a gas unit, most of the visit is pulling the glass, cleaning the pilot and burner, testing the sensors, and reassembling — the actual test-fire is quick. On a wood chimney, containment and setup take a real chunk before any brush turns, and cleanup at the end matters as much as the sweep. A tight, second-story flue or a rooftop termination you can only reach by ladder adds time. So does a firebox that hasn't been touched in five years versus one we serviced last fall.
When it runs long — or short
A few things reliably stretch an appointment. More than one fireplace in the house, obviously. Glazed creosote that resists a normal sweep. A part we find failing mid-service — a tired thermocouple, a grinding blower — that you want handled on the spot. Or a propane conversion and a unit we've never seen, where we're learning the manufacturer's log layout. On the short side, a modern direct-vent fireplace on an annual rhythm can be done and test-fired well under an hour. We give you a realistic window when you book so your day isn't a mystery.
Planning your day
You don't need to take off work for a fireplace service, but do give it a clear runway — clear a few feet around the hearth, keep pets and kids out of the work zone, and expect us to run the fireplace at the end, which means a little heat and, on a first fall burn, a whiff of dust burning off.
