How much carbon dioxide does a gas fireplace produce?

Roughly a few pounds an hour while it's running — a mid-sized gas fireplace burning around 25,000 to 40,000 BTU produces carbon dioxide on the same order as a gas oven or your furnace, because it's the same clean combustion of the same fuel. On a direct-vent or vented unit, all of that CO2 leaves the house; only a ventless model releases it into the room.

The rough numbers

CO2 output tracks fuel burned, which tracks BTUs. Burning natural gas releases roughly a tenth of a pound of CO2 per thousand BTU, so a fireplace rated around 30,000 BTU — think our best-selling Napoleon Ascent 36 at 26,500, or a Majestic Meridian at 30,000 — puts out on the order of three to four pounds an hour at full fire.

Propane is in the same ballpark per unit of heat. Turn the flame down and the number drops with it. These are honest approximations, not lab certificates.

Indoors vs. up the flue

For indoor air, the total CO2 matters far less than where it ends up. A direct-vent fireplace burns in a sealed chamber and vents 100% of its exhaust — CO2 included — outside through a coaxial pipe. A vented log set sends it up the chimney. In both, your room air is untouched.

Only a ventless unit deliberately releases CO2 into the living space, which is exactly why those have oxygen-depletion sensors and room-size limits. So "how much CO2" is really only an indoor question for ventless.

Context that matters more than the figure

A few pounds of CO2 an hour is unremarkable next to everyday household combustion — cooking dinner on a gas range, running the furnace, or idling a car does comparable or more.

What we'd actually keep an eye on is carbon monoxide, not carbon dioxide. CO comes from incomplete combustion in a dirty or malfunctioning unit, and it's the genuinely dangerous one.
