How much does a chimney liner cost when installing a gas or wood insert?

Around Black Mountain the liner is a minor line on an insert quote, but the shaded, cool character of the area — especially Montreat's heavily wooded lots — makes insulation the detail worth paying for. Chimneys that never catch full sun stay cold, and a cold exterior flue drafts poorly until it's warmed. An insulated, properly sized stainless liner solves that from the first light.

Shade, inversions, and stubborn draft

The Swannanoa Valley funnels cold air, and Black Mountain mornings routinely run 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville's, with frost lingering later into spring. Add Montreat's dense tree canopy — houses stay shaded, cool, and damp — and you get chimneys that simply never warm up on their own. A cold flue holds its air and won't draft until something breaks the seal, which is exactly why we push insulated liners on the exterior chimneys so common up here: the wrap keeps the flue gases hot enough to climb even when the masonry around them is frozen.

Natural gas, sealed and simple

Black Mountain sits on the natural-gas mains, so most inserts here are clean, sealed gas units that light at the switch and need a liner sized precisely to them. The stainless liner gives the appliance the flue diameter it was built for, so it drafts right and doesn't soot — and on the moisture-prone chimneys around Montreat and Ridgecrest, keeping the interior of that flue dry protects the masonry season after season. A Napoleon Oakville X4 or Kozy Heat Chaska dropped in with a fresh liner turns an old firebox into a dependable heater.

Close to home, quoted as one number

Black Mountain is only about 15 minutes east of our Asheville showroom, so scheduling a free in-home assessment is easy — we measure the flue, check the crown, and quote the insert, liner, cap, labor, and Buncombe County permit as one installed figure. No surprise liner line, and if another bid runs cheaper, check that the liner's really in it. See the [fireplace insert cost guide](/guides/fireplace-insert-cost) or call (828) 545-0525.
