How much does a cord of firewood cost in Western North Carolina?

A cord in Brevard costs what it costs anywhere in the mountains — species, seasoning, and delivery set the range — but in Transylvania County seasoning is the number that should worry you most. With 80-plus inches of rain a year, wood that isn't truly dry, and kept dry, fights you all winter. Buy seasoned or kiln-dried, store it covered, and call local suppliers for the going rate.

Why seasoning is everything in Transylvania

Brevard is one of the wettest places we serve, and moisture is the enemy of a good fire. Green wood in this climate can take a full year to season, and even seasoned wood left uncovered will pull dampness back out of the air, hiss, smoke, and coat your flue with creosote. That's why the seasoned or kiln-dried premium is worth paying here more than almost anywhere — a cheap cord of green wood is money spent on a fire you can't really use until next winter. Ask the supplier point-blank whether it's seasoned, and insist on a true full cord, not a loosely stacked pile.

Covered storage in the wettest county

How you store it matters as much as what you buy. Keep the stack off the wet ground, top-covered but open on the sides so air moves through, and away from the house. Brevard's crawl spaces and chimney chases already take a beating from all that rain — spalled brick, cracked crowns, rusted dampers — so a chimney that hasn't been checked in a few years deserves a look before you lean on it. A fresh liner or a sealed insert both keeps the weather out and burns your wood far more efficiently.

The appliance side is ours

We don't sell firewood, but the hearth that burns it is exactly our lane. Around Brevard's timber-frame and mountain-modern homes, some owners want a real wood fire — a Regency or Superior EPA unit — and others want the wood-fire look without hauling cords, which is where a hand-built Mendota gas fireplace comes in. Out on propane where the mains don't reach, we set up the gas side, permitted and pressure-tested with Transylvania County. We're 40 minutes from our Asheville showroom. Call (828) 545-0525.
