How much does a cord of firewood cost in Western North Carolina?
In Canton a cord costs what the local market's charging this season — species, seasoning, and delivery set the range — but two things are unusual here. Flooding left plenty of raw wood around yet seasoned, ready-to-burn wood stays scarce, and any hearth or gas line that took on water needs inspecting before you light it. We don't sell wood; we make sure the appliance is safe to burn.
After the flood, wood but not the right wood
Storm cleanup and blowdown put a lot of raw timber on the ground around the Pigeon River valley, and that can make cheap green wood easy to find. Don't mistake it for a bargain: seasoning still takes months to a year no matter how much fresh wood is lying around, so ready-to-burn seasoned or kiln-dried wood stays the scarce, premium item, and oak, hickory, and locust sit at the top of the range for burning hot and long. A green cord you can't light until next winter isn't heat this winter. At 2,587 feet Canton's heating season is long, so however you buy, you'll go through more of it than folks down in the milder valleys. Buy from an established seller, insist on a true full cord, ask flat-out whether it's seasoned, then price in delivery up into the valley and stacking.
Check the hearth before you burn
This is the part that's specific to Canton: floodwater got into fireboxes and gas appliances here, and valley-floor fog and dampness rust dampers and caps faster than folks expect. A fireplace or wood stove that sat in water — or a gas connection that did — should be inspected before it carries a fire again. If yours needs replacing, a sealed EPA wood insert or a Regency wood unit burns cleaner and hotter per cord than a tired open box, and on the gas side every line we run is permitted and pressure-tested with Haywood County.
