Buy by the cord — the real one

A full cord is an actual measurement: 128 cubic feet, a stack four feet by four feet by eight feet. A "face cord," "rick," or "truckload" is some fraction of that, and the fraction is whatever the seller says it is. When you compare prices, force every quote into full-cord terms or you're comparing nothing. Species matters just as much: dense hardwoods like oak and hickory carry far more heat per cord than soft mixed loads, so the cheaper cord is often the more expensive heat.

Seasoned is the whole ballgame

Green wood is water wearing a bark jacket. Burn it and you spend your money boiling that water instead of heating the room — and you paint your flue with creosote while you do it. The WNC rhythm that works: buy in spring, stack it off the ground with the top covered, burn it the following winter. If you're buying "seasoned" wood in October, be politely skeptical. Ask when it was split, and knock two pieces together — dry wood rings, wet wood thuds.

How many cords depends on what's burning them

The same house can burn wildly different amounts depending on the appliance. An open masonry fireplace is the bottomless pit — it can actually run a net heat loss while it eats your woodpile.
