How much does it cost per hour to run a propane fireplace?

In Arden, you're on the natural-gas main, but the bigger cost lever is the housing: 1980s-90s homes in Royal Pines and Skyland with tired open masonry fireplaces that pull heat out of the room. Whether you feed a new sealed insert with natural gas or propane, it's the sealed unit — not the fuel — that makes it cheap to run.

The open box is the problem

Arden's established Royal Pines and Skyland neighborhoods are full of open masonry fireplaces from the '80s and '90s that were never efficient heaters — they draw warmed room air straight up the chimney and can run a net heat loss. That's expensive on any fuel. The fix that actually moves your bill is a sealed insert dropped into the existing opening: it commonly runs 70% efficient or better, modulates the flame down once the room's warm, and keeps the heat inside instead of sending it up the flue. Arden mostly has the natural-gas main, so many of these inserts run on utility gas — but the efficiency win is the same on propane.

Fuel is the smaller variable

Once you've got an efficient sealed unit, the fuel question is secondary. On the gas main, you're metered; on a propane tank out toward the rural edges, you're paying a delivered per-gallon rate that rises in cold snaps. Either way, run the fireplace as a zone heater — warm the room you're in, ease the central heat down — and it undercuts heating the whole house. Biltmore Park's retail and office spaces run the same playbook with linear gas units on a bigger scale.
