How long will a 500-gallon propane tank last if I use my fireplace regularly?
If the fireplace is the only thing on the tank, a 500-gallon tank could run it for a full season or more — even regular evening use barely dents it. But a 500-gallon tank almost always feeds a furnace and water heater too, and those empty it far faster than any fireplace ever will.
The fireplace is the small eater
A 500-gallon tank fills to about 400 usable gallons — roughly 36 million BTU. A fireplace burning 30,000 BTU an hour uses about a third of a gallon per hour, so even a couple of hours a night, all winter, adds up to a modest slice of that tank. On the fireplace alone, one fill can carry you through a WNC heating season with room to spare. Regular use, in fireplace terms, is not what drains a 500.
What actually empties the tank
On most propane properties around Fairview, Candler, or up toward Cashiers, the 500-gallon tank is the whole-house supply — furnace, water heater, sometimes a range and dryer. The furnace is the heavyweight; it can burn 80,000 to 100,000 BTU an hour and runs on a thermostat around the clock in January. Next to that, the fireplace is a rounding error.
