If your fireplace is a regular part of how you heat, automatic delivery is the safer, lower-stress choice. Your supplier uses degree-day data, how cold it's actually been, to estimate your burn and tops the tank off before it gets low, without you tracking anything.
Will-call puts the whole job on you: watch the gauge, judge how fast you're using it, and call in time. It rarely saves money and it adds risk.
