Should I set up automatic propane delivery or stay on will-call if I use my fireplace a lot?

Most of the city never faces this question

Natural gas runs the mains through Montford, West Asheville, North Asheville, and Biltmore Village, and a metered utility refills itself invisibly — no gauge, no schedule, no decision. If that's your house, the whole auto-versus-will-call debate simply doesn't apply to you.

But not every Asheville address is on the main. Older lots on the city's edges and some newer South Asheville builds sit on buried propane, and those are the homes this question is actually written for.

For the propane pockets, lean automatic

Heavy winter use here means real burn — elevation keeps nighttime lows in the 20s well into early spring, so a fireplace you rely on runs a lot of hours. Automatic delivery uses your usage history against how cold it's actually been and tops the tank off before you drop low.

Will-call rarely comes out cheaper, and it hands you the whole job: read the gauge, judge the pace, call in time. Miss it once and you're the one waiting when the whole county's calling at once.
