How much does it cost to reface or update the look of an existing fireplace?

Aging clay liners change the plan
Those old clay flue liners are frequently at the end of their run, and if you're adding a gas or wood insert, the liner has to be right first — a correctly sized stainless liner is part of doing it safely, not an upsell. Running and permitting the gas line with Henderson County and pressure-testing it is licensed work; a mason can rebuild the face beautifully but legally can't connect the fuel.
