How much does it cost to repair or replace a fireplace damper?

What usually breaks — and why it's rarely expensive

Throat dampers live a hard life: a cast-iron plate sitting in a damp chimney, rained on whenever the cap is missing, expanding and contracting through every mountain winter. They rust, warp, seize, and drop their handles. Most of what we find is fixable in a single visit with modest parts — the kind of job we mean when we say fireplace repair is usually inexpensive parts and quick labor. A damper rusted into a half-open position is also why so many older Asheville living rooms feel drafty; you're venting warm air up the stack all winter.

Repair the throat damper or upgrade to a top-sealing one?

If the original plate is restorable, repair is the cheap path. But when a throat damper is badly warped or rotted, we'd rather talk about a top-sealing damper — a spring-loaded lid at the top of the chimney, closed by a cable at the firebox. It seals far tighter than any throat damper ever did, doubles as a rain and critter barrier, and in an older, leakier home the draft it stops is money back every heating month. It costs more than patching the old plate, and for a fireplace you actually use, it's usually the better spend.

Cold flue is a real thing at our elevation — cold air sits in the chimney like a plug — and a tight damper is your first defense against it pouring into the room.

Converting to gas logs? Different answer entirely
