What a standard sweep includes

A proper cleaning runs brushes or a rotary system the full length of the flue, clears the smoke shelf and firebox, removes the season's creosote, and finishes with a Level 1 visual inspection — cap, crown, damper, liner condition where visible. That once-a-year rhythm is the CSIA and NFPA standard for a reason: first-stage creosote brushes out easily; ignored creosote doesn't.

When the bill grows past routine

Glazed, third-stage creosote — the shiny, tar-hardened layer left by years of slow, smoldering fires — can't simply be brushed off and takes mechanical or chemical treatment across multiple passes. That's the most common reason a sweep costs more than expected. Others we see across WNC: animal nests after a season without a cap, steep or complicated roof access on mountain builds, and repairs the sweep uncovers, like a cracked crown or a failing damper.
