How much does it cost to run a gas line to a fireplace?
Distance is the price. A fireplace on the same side of the house as the meter or tank is a short, simple run; one across the house or out to a patio costs more, because pipe footage, fittings, and access drive the labor. It's a big reason a gas fireplace installation typically runs $3,500–$8,000 installed — the unit, the venting, and how far the gas line has to travel.
What actually sets a gas line's price
Four variables do most of the work: how far the line runs from your meter or propane tank, what's between here and there (an open crawlspace is quick; finished walls and slab are not), whether it's an interior run or a buried, outdoor-rated line, and whether your existing gas service can carry the new load. That last one trips people up — add a fireplace to a house already running a gas furnace, water heater, and range, and the meter or regulator sometimes needs upsizing. Material and fittings matter less than people assume; it's the footage and the access that move the quote. Older homes around Asheville and Weaverville with tight crawlspaces and plaster walls take more labor than a new build in Fletcher with open framing.
Licensed work, by law
In North Carolina, running or extending a gas line is licensed work. A handyman or general contractor legally can't do it — we can, and we permit and pressure-test every line we run, with the county inspector signing off in Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood, or Transylvania. That's not red tape for its own sake: a pressure-tested, inspected line is the difference between an appliance you trust and one you wonder about. It also protects your insurance coverage and your home sale down the road.
