How much electricity does an electric fireplace use?
An electric fireplace with the heater running draws about 1,500 watts — that's 1.5 kilowatt-hours for every hour on full heat, roughly the same as a space heater or a hair dryer. The flame effect by itself uses only a small fraction of that, tens of watts, so running just the flames costs almost nothing.
Two very different draws
An electric fireplace really has two modes, and they use wildly different amounts of power. The heating element is the big draw — most plug-in units, including the Dimplex IgniteXL Bold we display in the showroom, top out around 1,500 watts, which puts out roughly 5,000 BTU and warms up to about 400 square feet as supplemental heat. That's the ceiling a standard 120-volt outlet can safely deliver. The LED flame effect, by contrast, sips power — just a handful of watts to run the lights and a small motor.
What that means on your bill
Run the heater for an hour and you've used about 1.5 kilowatt-hours. To turn that into dollars, multiply by the per-kWh rate printed on your electric bill — it's a small, predictable number, and you only pay it when the heater is actually on. Many people run the flames year-round for the look and switch the heater on only when they want warmth, which keeps running costs low. Because there's no venting, no pilot, and no fuel, nearly all that electricity becomes heat in the room — electric is essentially 100 percent efficient right at the appliance.
The catch worth knowing
The flip side of all that convenience is the one thing electric can't do: make heat when the power's out. After Helene left much of Western North Carolina without electricity for days, that distinction mattered a great deal. An electric fireplace is a wonderful, clean, flip-a-switch amenity — no venting, no gas line, no chimney — but it goes dark with the grid. If backup heat is your goal, gas or wood is the answer; if you just want ambiance and a little supplemental warmth in a room that never had a fireplace, electric is a great fit.
