Does an electric fireplace need a dedicated circuit?
A plug-in electric fireplace doesn't strictly require a dedicated circuit, but it's strongly recommended — the 1,500-watt heater draws about 12.5 amps, which is most of a standard 15-amp circuit. Sharing that circuit with other loads can trip the breaker. Larger 240-volt hardwired models do need their own dedicated circuit, wired by a licensed electrician.
The load a heater puts on a circuit
A 1,500-watt heating element pulls roughly 12.5 amps at 120 volts. A standard household circuit is 15 or 20 amps, and electrical guidelines want a heater — a continuous load — to use no more than about 80 percent of a circuit's rating. That math means a 1,500-watt fireplace essentially wants a 15-amp circuit to itself. Put it on a circuit already feeding a TV, lamps, and other electronics, and you'll likely trip the breaker when the heater kicks on, or at best run everything right at the edge.
Plug-in versus hardwired units
Most electric fireplaces, including the plug-in models we display, run on a normal 120-volt outlet and are fine as long as that outlet isn't sharing its circuit with big loads — ideally it's a dedicated receptacle. Larger built-in and 240-volt units are a different story: those are hardwired and require their own dedicated circuit and breaker sized to the unit. If you're building the fireplace into a wall or stepping up to a higher-output model, plan for that circuit from the very start rather than discovering the need later.
