Do electric fireplaces come in 240-volt versions, and do they put out more heat?

Yes — some larger built-in electric fireplaces come in 240-volt versions, and they do put out more heat than a standard 120-volt plug-in. Instead of the roughly 1,500 watts a wall outlet allows, a hardwired 240-volt unit runs a bigger heating element for a larger room. It's still supplemental heat, though — and like any electric fireplace, it's dead in a power outage.

Why 240 volts means more heat

A standard household outlet is 120 volts and safely caps an electric fireplace at about 1,500 watts — roughly 5,000 BTU, enough to warm up to around 400 square feet as supplemental heat. A 240-volt circuit can carry a bigger heating element, so those hardwired models produce noticeably more warmth and cover a larger room. The catch is that 240 volts isn't a plug-in convenience: it has to be hardwired into its own dedicated circuit by a licensed electrician, more like wiring an appliance than plugging in a lamp.

More heat, same fundamental limits

Even the biggest electric fireplace is still supplemental, room-level heat — not central heating and not a whole-house solution. Here's what no amount of voltage changes: electric heat needs the grid. A 240-volt fireplace is just as dead as a 120-volt one when the power fails — and in Western North Carolina, where Helene left homes without electricity for days, that's the deciding factor for a lot of people. If you want more heat and don't mind the wiring, a 240-volt electric unit is a fine choice for ambiance and supplemental warmth.
