How much fireplace heat do I need to keep my pipes from freezing during a long winter outage?

Far less than you'd think — keeping a house above freezing takes a fraction of the heat that full comfort does. A single power-optional gas or wood fireplace in the main living area, with interior doors open, will usually hold a typical home's core above 40 degrees. The catch is distribution: pipes in far corners, crawlspaces, and outside walls can still freeze.

Freeze protection is a low bar

Comfort heat and freeze protection are two very different targets. As a rule of thumb, comfortable heat runs around 20 BTU per square foot in a moderate climate — and WNC pushes that up. But you're not trying to be comfortable in an outage; you're trying to keep the house above freezing — which really means holding the main space around 40 so the cold corners never dip to 32.

That takes a small fraction of the output, which is why one good radiant fireplace can protect a whole home's plumbing even though it can't make every room cozy. The heat you need to save your pipes is modest — the challenge is getting it to travel.

The real enemy is cold pockets, not total output

Without power, there's no blower or air handler moving warm air, so heat pools near the fireplace and thins out down the hall. The pipes that freeze aren't usually in the warm room — they're in the far bathroom on an exterior wall, the kitchen sink against the north side, or the crawlspace underneath.

So pair the fireplace with the old-fashioned tricks: open interior doors and cabinet doors under sinks, and let a faucet at the far end of the house drip. That keeps water moving to the vulnerable spots the fireplace can't reach directly.

When one hearth isn't enough

A sprawling or multi-level mountain home, or one with plumbing running through an unconditioned crawlspace, may need more than a single source to stay safe through a multi-day freeze — a second hearth, or a fireplace plus a standby generator keeping the central system alive.
