That's enough supplemental heat for a room up to about 400 square feet. Electric is nearly 100% efficient at the unit, since all the electricity becomes heat.
The watts-to-BTU math, made simple
Gas and wood appliances are rated in BTUs, while electric ones are rated in watts, and that mismatch is what trips people up when they try to compare. The conversion is fixed and simple: one watt equals about 3.412 BTU per hour. So the common 1,500-watt electric fireplace — the ceiling for anything running on a standard household outlet — produces right around 5,000 BTU. That's the number to hold in your head when you're weighing an electric unit against a gas fireplace rated at, say, 30,000 or 40,000 BTU. It isn't a knock on electric; the two are just built for different jobs, and the math makes that plain.
