How much natural gas does a gas fireplace use, and what does it cost per hour?

Most of Brevard runs on propane rather than a gas main, so forget therms — you're pricing per gallon. A 30,000-BTU Kozy Heat Springfield 36, built for propane-country cabins, uses about a third of a gallon an hour on high, since propane holds roughly 91,500 BTU a gallon. Multiply that by your supplier's per-gallon price, and less as it modulates.

Propane changes the whole calculation

Out here you watch a tank gauge instead of a meter, so cost per hour comes with a second question — when's the next delivery. Propane also burns hotter per unit than natural gas and needs different orifices and pressures; a unit set up for the wrong fuel soots the glass and wastes what you paid for. Because it's typically pricier per BTU than natural gas, the efficiency of the appliance matters more here, not less. A sealed direct-vent unit keeps most of that expensive propane in the room rather than sending it up a chimney.

Wet Transylvania winters, protected combustion

Brevard takes 80-plus inches of rain a year, and that water cracks crowns, spalls brick, and rusts dampers on the downtown homes and cabins alike. An open masonry flue in that climate is a maintenance liability; a sealed direct-vent fireplace sidesteps the chimney entirely. For the timber-frame and mountain-modern homes around here, a hand-built Mendota FullView FV41 at 40,000 BTU makes a luxury centerpiece — closer to half a gallon an hour wide open, and worth pricing honestly before you install it.

Permitted, tested, one trip southwest

Connecting a propane system — regulator, piping, appliance setup — is licensed work; we handle that side and coordinate the tank with your propane supplier, then pull the Transylvania County permit and pressure-test the line. We're 40 minutes southwest of the Asheville showroom. Call (828) 545-0525 for a free in-home assessment.
