How much will a gas fireplace add to my monthly gas bill?
Expect a noticeable line on winter bills, not a shocking one: a sealed direct-vent fireplace burning a quarter to a third of a therm per hour, run a few evenings a week, adds far less than the furnace consumes — and if you zone-heat with it and drop the thermostat for the rest of the house, it can pay part of its own way.
Three numbers set your answer
Hours per month, the unit's BTU input, and the rate on your bill — multiply them and you have the adder. A 26,500 BTU unit run two hours a night works out to about 16 therms a month at full flame, and real use lands lower because flames get turned down and thermostatic models cycle. Nobody — including us — can honestly quote the dollar figure without your per-therm or per-gallon rate, but the multiplication takes thirty seconds once you pull a bill.
Don't forget the pilot
A standing (millivolt) pilot sips gas around the clock, all month — a small, steady adder that's the price of ignition that still works with the power out, which is why we keep recommending it for outage security in the mountains. Electronic ignition systems like IntelliFire only burn gas when the fireplace is on. If the off-season bill bothers you, a standing pilot can be shut down for summer — just plan on a fall service visit before relighting, because dormant pilot assemblies are exactly where spiders and dust cause trouble.
Zone heating can flip the sign
The fireplace's job on a January night isn't heating the house — it's heating the room you're actually in while the thermostat drops for the rooms you're not. Run that way, many customers find the gas-bill bump partly or fully offset by what the central system stops burning.
The honest flip side: hours of full flame every day on propane will show up on the bill, no way around it. That usage pattern argues for a high-efficiency sealed unit with a modulating flame — the kind of matchup we sort out at a free in-home assessment. Call (828) 545-0525.
