How much will a gas fireplace add to my monthly gas bill?
In Candler the first thing that sets your bill is which fuel you're on: the newer Enka-Candler subdivisions closer in may reach a natural-gas main, but much of Candler — up the Pisgah Highway and out through Hominy Valley — runs on propane, delivered by the gallon to a tank. Metered therms and tank refills behave nothing alike.
Gas main or propane tank?
It's worth confirming before you shop. If your Enka-Candler subdivision has natural gas, the fireplace meters by the therm on your monthly bill — the cheap-per-unit case. If you're on propane like much of the rural stretches out here, there's no monthly meter; you fill a tank a few times a season and budget by the gallon. Propane burns hotter per unit but costs more per BTU, so efficiency and modulated flame matter more on that side of the road.
Builder-grade boxes and what they cost
Candler's fast new subdivisions often ship with basic decorative fireboxes — low BTU, low heat, low adder, but low payoff. Owners here tend to want a real heat-producing upgrade within a few years. A sealed, heat-rated unit costs a little more per hour but actually warms the room, and in the Hominy Valley bowl a clean-burning sealed appliance is easier on the air that settles in that natural basin than an open fire is.
Get the fuel right first
The appliance has to match your supply — propane and natural gas use different orifices and pressures, and a mismatch soots and wastes fuel.
