How often should a wood-burning fireplace chimney be swept?

Transylvania County catches 80-plus inches of rain a year, and that moisture cracks crowns, spalls brick, and rusts dampers on downtown homes and mountain cabins alike. Both jobs go together.
Rain is the real enemy of a Brevard chimney
You can burn a modest number of fires and still watch your chimney degrade fast in Brevard, because the water does damage the creosote never touches. Eighty-plus inches of annual rain — heaviest March through June — works into the crown, freezes and spalls the brick face, rusts the damper, and finds any gap in the flashing. Crawl spaces and chimney chases here stay damp, so liners and dampers corrode from the outside in. The creosote sweep still follows the usual rule — clear it around an eighth-inch, roughly once a season for most homes — but in this climate the inspection is where a chimney really earns its yearly visit, whether you burned a lot or a little.
What we look for after a wet season

A stainless cap and proper waterproofing often do more for a mountain chimney than anything else, sealing the water out before it can undo the masonry.
