Many Backgrounds. One Standard.
Black Mountain, North Carolina

I just moved into a home with a fireplace — should I have it inspected before using it?

Yes, before the first fire — and in Black Mountain the local wrinkle is cold. The Swannanoa Valley traps temperature inversions that leave mornings 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville, and a cold flue behaves like a plug. A mystery fireplace here can draft poorly on day one, and we'd rather find that in an inspection than in a smoke-back.

Cold valleys, stubborn draft

Black Mountain sits at 2,405 feet where valley cold-air pooling and inversions are the norm, and cold air sits in a chimney like a plug until the flue warms. On an inherited fireplace you don't know the flue's condition or whether it was ever sized right, and combine that with a hard morning inversion and the very first fire can spill smoke back into the room. An inspection checks the draw, the liner, the damper, and the cap so you know the chimney will actually pull before you light it, not after the living room fills with smoke.

Montreat's damp, shaded lots

Up toward Montreat and Ridgecrest the heavily wooded lots keep houses cool, shaded, and moisture-prone — exactly the conditions that rust dampers, grow mold in an unused flue, and invite animals into a cold cap. If the home sat empty between owners, add that to the reasons to look first, because a vacant chimney collects water and nests fast in this microclimate.

Gas on the main

Most of Black Mountain runs on the natural-gas main, so if a prior owner's gas fireplace went in without a Buncombe County permit, we'll catch it and verify the line was pressure-tested — that's licensed work in NC. We're 15 minutes west in Asheville. Once the first inspection is behind you, you're on a normal annual cadence. Call (828) 545-0525.
