Is a bird's nest or animal in the chimney a fire or carbon monoxide hazard?
Black Mountain's heavily wooded lots put more wildlife around your chimney than almost anywhere we serve, so a nest or animal in the flue is a real, recurring risk here — and it's both hazards. Dry nesting debris near the flue top can catch an ember and become a chimney fire, and even unburned it blocks the draft, pushing smoke and carbon monoxide back into the room.
The trees are the reason
The shaded, densely wooded lots around Montreat, Ridgecrest, and the Swannanoa Valley keep houses cool and moist — and they keep a lot of squirrels, raccoons, and birds looking for cavities. To an animal, an uncapped clay flue reads as a hollow tree with a dry floor: a den in winter, a nursery in spring. Raccoons will raise a litter on the smoke shelf; chimney swifts glue their nests to the flue wall through the summer. Add the leaf-fall these canopies drop and a chimney can pack itself shut in a single off-season.
Cold mornings pull you toward an early fire
The valley's temperature inversions run mornings 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville, and frost lingers into late spring here. That means people reaching for the fireplace early and often — sometimes lighting the first fire of the year on a flue that's been quietly colonized since April. Before that fire, watch for the tells: scratching or chirping overhead, a fireplace that won't draw, or a sharp, musty odor. Any of them is a stop-and-call, not a light-it-and-see.
Clear it, cap it, and mind the swift law
One legal note: chimney swifts are federally protected, so an active nest with eggs or young has to be waited out — usually into early fall — before it's cleared and capped.
