Is a chimney safe to use after a lightning strike or storm damage?
Treat it as out of service until it's been inspected. Montreat's dense canopy and the wooded slopes across the Swannanoa Valley keep homes cool and shaded — and put a lot of heavy timber directly over a lot of chimneys. When a storm brings a limb down on masonry, the damage is often internal: a cracked or displaced flue tile, a shifted crown, a liner broken in a spot you can't see from the driveway. Lightning does its own version, flash-heating trapped moisture until tiles split top to bottom. Either fault lets flue heat and carbon monoxide reach the framing around the chase, which is the quiet beginning of a structure fire. After the region's big storms we scanned plenty of chimneys that looked fine from the yard and weren't.
