Is a chimney safe to use after a lightning strike or storm damage?

No — keep it out of service until inspected. Many gas hearths out toward Hominy Valley run on propane rather than a mains connection, so a lightning strike here can hit both the flue and the fuel side. On the chimney, a strike cracks liners unseen; on the gas side, it can jar a connection into leaking. A Level 2 scan plus a gas check is how you confirm it's safe.

Fuel and flue, checked together

Candler is growing fast, with new subdivisions around Enka and older homes spread through Hominy Valley — and out here a good share of gas hearths run on propane rather than a natural-gas main, especially away from the newer streets. That's why a storm inspection should cover two things at once. A lightning strike flash-heats the moisture inside masonry until clay tiles split and crown pieces break off, damage that never shows from the driveway. The same strike can jar a propane regulator, line, or appliance connection into seeping. Many local builder-grade fireboxes are decorative to begin with, but decorative or not, a cracked flue or a rattled gas connection is a hazard — and as a licensed gas contractor we can read both, which a showroom or mason legally cannot.

Buncombe inspection, close by

A Level 2 scan runs a camera through the full flue and checks the crown, cap, flashing, attic pass-through, and firebox, and we can pressure-check the gas or propane connection on the same visit. We inspect across Buncombe County and put it in writing with photos — the documentation your insurer needs after a lightning loss. Candler sits about fifteen minutes west of our Emma Rd shop, so response is quick. Keep the fireplace cold until we've cleared it, and let us cover any storm-damaged cap before more rain. If you smell gas or propane near the tank, the line, or the chimney, leave the house first and call (828) 545-0525 from a safe distance.
