Maggie Valley runs on vacation rentals and cabins, and that changes the whole calculation. A fireplace that sits cold for weeks, then has to work on the first try for a guest who's never seen it before, wants to be a gas unit — flame at the flip of a switch or a wall control, no kindling, no cold-start smoke, no ash for a cleaner to deal with between stays. A wood-burning outdoor fireplace asks the guest to build, tend, and clean a fire, which is charming for some renters and a hassle for most. For hands-off reliability, gas is the property manager's friend.
Propane-only, at real elevation
At better than 3,000 feet, Maggie Valley is one of the coldest spots we serve, and it's propane country — there's no natural-gas main to tie into. So a gas outdoor fireplace here means a properly sized propane tank and a line built for LP's hotter burn and different pressure, capable of feeding the firebox through a long cold evening. Connecting that system is licensed gas work in North Carolina; the propane company drops the tank, but the regulator, piping, and appliance hookup are ours — and we pull the Haywood County permit and pressure-test the line. We schedule pre-season inspections before peak rental months so nothing fails on a booked weekend.
When wood still makes sense
If it's your own cabin and the fire itself is the getaway — the crackle, the smell, an open lot with a real chimney — wood is a wonderful choice up here, and the cold makes its deep heat welcome.
