Is an old wood stove worth repairing or should I replace it?
If it's a sound, EPA-certified stove that just needs gaskets, firebrick, or a baffle, repair it — those are cheap, routine parts. Replace it if it's a pre-EPA smoke dragon, the body is cracked or warped, or you want the efficiency and cleaner burn of a modern stove. Age plus non-certification is usually the tipping point.
The repairs that keep a good stove going
Wood stoves are built to last decades, and most wear items are simple: door gaskets that harden and leak, firebrick liners that crack, a baffle or catalytic combustor that's worn out, a warped damper. Those are inexpensive, and a stove that seals and drafts properly is worth maintaining. If you've got a solid Regency, Lopi, Jotul, or similar with good steel and glass, gaskets and firebrick will bring it right back — no reason to replace it.
When replacement is the smarter money
Two big flags. First, certification: stoves built before the 1988 EPA standard burn dirtier, waste a third or more of your wood as smoke, and raise the creosote-and-chimney-fire risk. Second, structure: a cracked or warped firebox, burned-out interior, or failed welds isn't worth repairing — that's a safety line. Some insurers and jurisdictions also look hard at old uncertified stoves.
