The door gasket: cheap insurance against a leaky burn

A wood stove's door gasket is the rope-like seal that lets you control the fire by controlling the air. When it hardens and flattens, the door no longer seals, the stove over-fires, and you lose the slow overnight burns that make a stove worth owning.

The quick test: close the door on a dollar bill and tug — if it slides out easily, the gasket's done. On a stove burning most evenings through a WNC winter, that's every two to five years. It's a spool of gasket rope and some cement, and one of the more satisfying small fixes there is.

Firebrick: replace bricks, not the stove

The firebrick lining protects the steel or cast body from direct flame and radiates heat back into the fire. Hairline surface cracks are normal and cosmetic — brick expands and contracts every burn. You only replace a brick when it's cracked clean through, crumbling, or pieces have fallen out and left metal exposed.

That can be many years out, and you swap the affected bricks individually rather than reline the whole box. Burning dry, seasoned wood and easing into cold starts makes them last; slamming a cold stove with a roaring fire cracks them early.

Fold it into annual service
