Is converting a wood-burning fireplace to gas safe?

Yes — a wood-to-gas conversion is safe in Clyde with a licensed gas contractor, and the town's housing makes it a common upgrade: those 1960s-to-'80s ranch-style homes with dated fireplaces are prime insert candidates. The catch is river humidity that rusts dampers and degrades masonry, so the conversion has to account for the shape the old chimney's actually in.

Ranch-era fireplaces are ready for an insert

Clyde is full of 1960s-to-'80s ranch-style builds whose original fireplaces are dated, inefficient, and ideal for a sealed gas insert. Dropping an insert into that existing firebox — with its own correctly sized stainless liner — is one of the most satisfying conversions we do: it reuses the opening you've already got, vents cleanly, seals combustion off from the room, and produces real, efficient heat instead of the net heat loss an old open firebox often runs. It's an upgrade that modernizes the room without rebuilding the chimney.

Damp air, rusted dampers, and a permit

Clyde shares the Pigeon valley's cold-air drainage and river humidity with Canton and Waynesville, and that damp air rusts dampers and degrades masonry chimneys faster than you'd expect. That matters two ways for a conversion. If you go the vented-log route, the required damper clamp has to seat on sound metal — a rusted-through damper won't hold it — and a moisture-degraded flue is itself a reason to choose a sealed insert with a new liner over trusting old masonry. We inspect the chimney's condition before recommending a path. The gas work is licensed either way: a showroom or mason legally can't connect fuel in North Carolina. We pull the Haywood County permit, pressure-test the line, and meet the inspector. Clyde's about 25 minutes west of our Asheville showroom. Call (828) 545-0525 for a free in-home assessment.
