Which is safer for an open masonry fireplace — a gas insert or gas logs?
A sealed gas insert is the safer of the two. Combustion happens inside a closed firebox behind glass, vented through its own new liner — no open flame in your living room, and no reliance on the condition of an aging masonry flue. Vented gas logs are safe when properly installed, but they're an open flame burning in your existing chimney with the damper clamped open.
Two very different animals in the same firebox
A gas insert is a sealed steel firebox with its own glass front, slid into the masonry opening and vented through a new liner that runs the full height of your chimney. Vented gas logs are an open burner dressed as a log set, sitting in the fireplace you already have, using the chimney you already have, with the damper permanently clamped open so it can never be closed on a burning fire. One replaces the fireplace's entire combustion system; the other borrows it.
Where the insert's safety edge comes from
Sealed combustion means the flame never shares air with the room — the insert draws from outside and exhausts through its own dedicated, correctly sized liner, so it doesn't care whether your 1940s clay flue tiles have hairline cracks. The glass front plus mesh screen also puts a physical barrier between kids, pets, and flame. Vented logs are safe when properly installed — but they're still an open flame depending on the draft and condition of an aging chimney, which is why we won't set logs into a flue we haven't inspected. In older Asheville and Weaverville masonry chimneys, that inspection finds problems more often than you'd think.
The heat question usually settles it
Vented logs are ambiance — a tall, realistic yellow flame with most of the heat going up the chimney. Beautiful, but never call it a heater. An insert commonly runs 70% efficient or better, and in millivolt or battery-backup form it keeps heating with the power out — a distinction WNC stopped taking lightly after Helene.
