Also keep ash away from acid-loving plants like blueberries, azaleas, and rhododendrons, which grow all over these mountains and actually want the low pH ash would undo.
Handling it safely
Ash dust is a fine particulate — don't breathe it. Wet it down or scoop it gently, and be absolutely sure it's dead cold before it goes anywhere: embers can hide in a bed of ash for days and have started plenty of fires from a bucket left on a deck. Store it in a covered metal container on a non-combustible surface until you use it.
