Is it dangerous to install a gas fireplace or gas logs yourself?
Brevard is propane country for much of its housing, and propane is exactly where DIY gas work turns dangerous — it runs at a different pressure than natural gas and demands the right orifices, or the logs soot and the burner makes carbon monoxide. In North Carolina, connecting that fuel is licensed work regardless, and Transylvania's 80-plus inches of rain a year add corrosion risks a homeowner rarely accounts for.
Why propane punishes guesswork
A natural-gas firebox connected to an LP tank without the factory conversion is one of the most common — and most dangerous — mountain mistakes. Propane's higher pressure needs a matched regulator, correctly sized piping, and the proper orifices, and getting any of it wrong shows up as soot on the logs and CO in the room, not as an obvious failure. Coordinating the tank with your propane supplier and setting the appliance up correctly is our lane. We pressure-test the line and prove it before it ever feeds a flame.
Transylvania's water works against you
Brevard's rainfall is relentless in the March-to-June wet season, and it's hard on hearth systems — cracked crowns, spalled brick, rusted dampers, and moisture-damaged chimney chases and crawl spaces. A buried outdoor gas line has to be outdoor-rated and properly protected, or wet ground corrodes a DIY run over time. When we install, we pull the Transylvania County permit, meet the inspector, and account for the moisture the way someone who works these mountains does. Unpermitted gas work can also void your homeowner's insurance the moment a claim or a home sale invites scrutiny.
