Is it dangerous to install a gas fireplace or gas logs yourself?
In Flat Rock, where homes date to the 1800s with oversized open masonry fireplaces and aging clay flue liners, installing gas yourself is dangerous in ways specific to old houses — and in North Carolina it's licensed work you can't legally do. A century-old flue and a DIY gas line are a poor match, and getting either wrong in a historic home carries real consequences.
Old flues, new fuel
Flat Rock's historic hearths were built enormous and open, which looks wonderful and heats terribly — much of the warmth goes straight up an aging clay-lined flue. The satisfying fix is a sealed gas insert that preserves the character while actually heating the room, but it needs a correctly sized chimney liner and a licensed gas line run through old, sometimes fragile masonry. A clay liner cracked with age won't safely vent a vented gas set, and a DIYer usually can't tell. We inspect the flue before gas ever enters the conversation.
Preserving character without cutting corners
The whole point in a historic home is to add modern heat without ruining what makes the house special — and that balance is craft, not a kit. We pull the Henderson County permit and meet the inspector, size the liner to the appliance, and pressure-test the line. Fixing the draft, not just the look
Those grand open fireboxes pull cold air into the room as much as they push heat out. A sealed insert closes that loop, and with battery-backup ignition it keeps heating when the power fails.
