Is it normal for gas fireplace glass to fog up when it first lights?
Yes. A light fog on the inside of the glass for the first few minutes of a cold start is completely normal. Burning gas produces water vapor, and when it hits cold glass it condenses — just like your breath on a window. As the glass warms, the fog clears on its own, usually within ten to fifteen minutes. Fog that never clears is a different story.
Why the fog shows up
Natural gas and propane both make water vapor as a byproduct of combustion. On a cold start — especially a frosty mountain morning around Asheville and Hendersonville — the glass sits well below the dew point, so that vapor beads into a thin haze. A few minutes later the glass is hot, the moisture evaporates, and it's gone. Both direct-vent and vented units do it, and it's nothing to fix.
Normal versus not normal
Normal looks like this: a haze that clears within about fifteen minutes of a cold start, worse on the coldest mornings, gone for the rest of the burn. Not normal is fog that lingers the entire time you run it, heavy running condensation, or water pooling at the bottom of the glass. That points to a venting problem, a glass gasket letting humid room air in, or — on a ventless set — the moisture those units inherently add to the room. If it also leaves a permanent white film, that's a separate issue worth looking at.
What to keep an eye on
If your glass fogs on every cold start and clears, do nothing — it's just physics doing its thing. If it stays foggy through the burn or you start seeing white mineral film build up, have us check the venting and door seal.
