Why won't my gas fireplace turn on at all?

Rule out the easy stuff first

Before anything expensive, walk the chain. Is there gas to the appliance — is the shutoff valve in the line, usually behind the lower louver or at the floor, turned to the open position? On a remote or thermostat unit, are the batteries fresh in both the handheld and the receiver box tucked behind the fireplace? Is the wall switch on, and set to a mode that actually calls for flame?

We see this weekly across Asheville and Hendersonville — a fireplace that sat all summer, a switch bumped off during a remodel, a remote whose receiver batteries quietly died. None of that is a real breakdown, and none of it costs anything to check.

Standing pilot vs. electronic ignition changes where you look

If your unit has a standing pilot — a small flame that burns year-round — and that flame is out, the fireplace has nothing to light from. A pilot that keeps dropping out usually points to a failing thermocouple, the sensor that proves the pilot is lit.

Electronic-ignition units light the pilot only on demand, off a battery pack or household power. After a WNC storm outage those backup batteries can be drained, or the ignition module may need a reset. Older units around here are almost always standing pilot; newer installs, electronic.

When it's ours to fix

If the pilot won't stay lit, the valve isn't responding, or the burner just won't catch after the basics check out, you're into the gas side — thermocouple, thermopile, gas valve, or ignition module.
