Rental and student housing around downtown Sylva and Cullowhee gets heavy use and light attention, and a fireplace that 'won't turn on' in that setting is often the sum of small neglected things: dead receiver batteries nobody replaced, a pilot that dropped and was never relit, a wall switch quietly failed. None of that is a real breakdown, and none of it costs anything to check first. If the pilot won't hold after that, the thermocouple is the usual wear part.
