Brevard is propane country by our fuel map, and out here a fireplace that won't light most often comes down to the tank — a runout or a frozen regulator — before anything on the appliance. Transylvania's 80-plus inches of yearly rain adds a second suspect: corrosion on the ignition and valve components. Call (828) 545-0525.
Start at the tank, not the firebox
Many Brevard homes and the cabins tucked up around Connestee Falls and Sherwood Forest run on propane rather than a gas main. Propane also burns hotter per unit and needs its own orifices and pressures, so a wrong-fuel or low-pressure setup shows up as a stubborn, sooty, won't-catch flame. But the first check is simpler: is there fuel in the tank and is the regulator clear? A mid-season runout is the single most common dead fireplace we find in Transylvania County.
A wet climate corrodes the parts that spark
Brevard's rainfall is punishing — 80-plus inches a year cracks crowns, spalls brick, and rusts dampers, and that same damp reaches the crawl-space chimney chases where moisture-sensitive parts live. Corroded thermocouple connections, a rust-fouled pilot assembly, or an oxidized igniter electrode will all leave you flipping a switch to nothing. This is why the wet spring months, March through June, are hard on hardware.
Licensed propane work, permitted
Connecting and setting up a propane system — regulator, piping, appliance conversion — is licensed work; a mason or delivery crew legally can't do it, and we can. We coordinate the tank with your supplier, pull the Transylvania County permit, and pressure-test the line. We're 40 minutes southwest of Asheville, so we plan Brevard visits efficiently and quote every repair before starting. Call (828) 545-0525.
