Steady Flame Fireplaces

Many Backgrounds. One Standard.

Nothing happens when I flip the switch on my fireplace — where do I start troubleshooting?

Start at the simplest link in the chain: the switch and its power source. On electronic-ignition units, check the receiver and remote batteries and make sure the remote isn't set to a mode that ignores the wall switch. On any unit, confirm the gas shutoff is open and, if it's a standing pilot, that the pilot is lit. Then call us.

Follow the chain from switch to flame

A gas fireplace lights through a short chain: the switch calls for flame, a small voltage opens the gas valve, and the pilot or igniter lights the burner. When nothing happens at the switch, the break is somewhere along that chain — and it pays to check the cheap, obvious links before assuming the worst.

Dead silence at the switch — no click, no spark, nothing — usually points to power or the switch itself, not the gas valve. That's good news; those are the least expensive things to sort out.

Batteries, gas, and pilot status

On electronic-ignition units, the receiver box behind the fireplace runs on batteries, and dead batteries there produce exactly this — a switch that does nothing. Swap the receiver and remote batteries first. If you're on a remote, make sure it isn't in a thermostat or off mode that overrides the switch.

Then confirm fuel: is the gas shutoff open? And on a standing-pilot unit, is the pilot flame actually lit? No pilot means nothing for the switch to light.

When the switch loop is the fault

If the basics check out and the switch still does nothing, the fault is likely in the millivolt loop — a failed wall switch, a corroded connection, or a thermopile no longer producing enough voltage to open the valve. That's diagnosed with a meter and fixed with an inexpensive part in most cases. Because it lives on the gas control side, it's licensed work and ours to handle. We carry the common parts, so most are one-visit fixes. Call (828) 545-0525.
