Why does my gas fireplace click repeatedly but never light?

First, is fuel actually getting there?

The spark can click all day, but with no gas at the pilot, nothing lights. On propane homes out in Fairview, Candler, or Brevard, the first thing to confirm is that the tank isn't empty and the supplier's valve is open. On natural-gas homes along the Asheville and Hendersonville mains, check that the appliance shutoff wasn't closed.

After a summer of sitting, air often settles in the line and the first light takes longer while it purges. If it's been recently serviced or the tank ran dry, that air is almost certainly why it clicks without catching.

The spider story is real

We say it on nearly every fall service call: spiders love the smell of the gas train and spin webs right in the pilot orifice over the off-season. A blocked orifice starves the pilot, and you get exactly this — endless clicking, no flame. It's the single most common first-of-the-season no-light we see in older WNC homes.

Clearing and tuning the pilot assembly is routine maintenance, not a major repair. It's also the reason annual service in late summer pays for itself before you're depending on the heat.

Spark electrode and gap

If fuel is present and the orifice is clear, the spark electrode itself may be dirty, cracked, or sitting at the wrong gap so the spark lands weakly or in the wrong spot. That's a precise adjustment, and on many units it lives right next to the gas components — so it's work for our licensed techs, not a screwdriver job at home. Most of these get solved in one visit.
