Why does my gas fireplace pilot light keep going out?

A pilot that lights but won't stay lit is the textbook sign of a failing thermocouple — the sensor that proves the pilot is burning and holds the pilot valve open. It can also be a weak or dirty pilot flame that isn't bathing the sensor properly, a loose connection, or a persistent draft. It's usually an inexpensive part.

The thermocouple, in plain terms

A thermocouple is a small sensor sitting in the pilot flame. The heat generates a tiny voltage, and that voltage is what tells the gas valve, "the pilot is lit, keep it open." When the thermocouple weakens with age, it stops producing enough voltage — so the moment you let go of the control knob, the valve decides the pilot is out and shuts the gas. Flame goes out, every time, right on cue.

This is one of the most common gas-fireplace repairs we run in Western NC, and the part itself is inexpensive.

A weak pilot can't hold either

Even a good thermocouple fails to hold if the pilot flame is starved. A pilot orifice partly clogged by off-season spider webbing or dust — the classic older-home problem here — produces a thin flame that doesn't fully wrap the sensor tip. The result looks identical: pilot lights, then dies. Cleaning and tuning the pilot assembly during service often solves it without any part at all.

Drafts, connections, and the fix

A loose thermocouple connection at the valve, or a real draft — a downdraft down a cold flue, common with WNC's ridge-and-valley terrain — can also knock the flame off the sensor. Our tech reads the thermocouple with a meter, checks the pilot flame and connections, and replaces the part if it's tired. Because it's on the gas valve, it's licensed work, not a DIY job, and it's usually a quick, affordable single-visit fix. Call (828) 545-0525.
